Most people associate the month of February with Valentine’s Day, which occurs each February 14^th. Others may look forward to time off from work to celebrate President Abraham Lincoln and George Washington’s birthdays. But February is also lauded for dozens of lesser  known events which commemorate everything from Black History Month to Groundhog Day. National Freedom Day is an observance that honors the signing of a resolution that proposed the 13th amendment of the nation’s constitution on February 1, 1865. Abraham Lincoln, who was the president at the time, signed the resolution to outlaw slavery.

Ground Hog Day, which falls on February 2 centers on the idea of the groundhog comes out of its home to “predict” the weather. Lake Arrowhead is one of the few locations in Southern California that actually has weather. Instead of keeping So Cal meteorologists bored, we welcome everything from bright sun to blustery wind, freezing temperatures, snow, frost, ice, sleet, hail, rain and fog. So, whatever Punxsutawney Phil predicts, celebrate his day at the BWW.

The Day the Music Died - Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash in 1959. At Belgian Waffle Works, we periodically provide live free music featuring local musicians.  Don’t forget to check out the free summer concert series during the summer months at the Lake Arrowhead Village.

Create a Vacuum Day is the little-known day when we should all make our houses and restaurants spick and span using vacuum cleaners. We take great pride in keeping our restaurant clean. Unlike some eateries in the area which look like a before scene in Restaurant Impossible, at Belgian, you will be able to enjoy your meal in a neat and tidy environment.

Lame Duck Day Located dockside, we sell small bags of food for .50 cents, so you and your family can feed the grateful Lake Arrowhead ducks.

Wave All your Fingers at Your Neighbor Day  Has anyone ever heard of this weird holiday? No matter. If you want to celebrate this odd event, you can dine on our patio or in our window-covered dining room and wave to anyone and everyone who passes by your lakeside seat.

Kite Flying Day Although it’s a bit weird that this holiday is celebrated smack in the middle of winter, you could bring your kite to Lake Arrowhead and fly it on the green, then come in from the cold for some latte or espresso made with fresh roasted coffee beans from Pine Cone Coffee Co. or a hot chocolate with whipped cream.

Clean out Your Computer Day Held on the second Monday of month, this day would be a great time to run a full virus scan and leave your computer unattended while dropping in for a bite or a beer.

Don’t Cry over Spilled Milk Day We serve large glasses of cold milk at Belgian Waffle Works. They go great with our homemade cinnamon loaf or a slice of pie. And if you accidentally spill yours, don’t cry. We’ve got plenty.

Cherry Pie Day Nearly as important as National American Pie Month, this day deserves to be recognized. So come in for a hot slice of pie. We’ll even warm it up and serve it ala-mode, if you prefer.

Hoodie-Hoo Day Celebrated in the Southern Hemisphere, this winter day is the time to run outside at noon, wave your hands over your head and chant “Hoodie-Hoo” as a way of chasing away winter and welcoming spring. If you come by Belgian Waffle Works to celebrate Hoodie-Hoo, we’ll keep your table safe while you run outside and make a fool of yourself.

Walking the Dog Day Lake Arrowhead Village is dog-friendly. Not only is there a doggie bakery, but many vendors stock free dog treats. Although you can’t bring your canine into Belgian Waffle Works, if it’s warm enough, you could sit on the lake view patio if you have a polite pooch with your dog outside the fence next to you.

National Tortilla Chip Day We don’t mean to brag. But we make one of the best California Salads made tortilla bowl, shredded lettuce, grilled chicken breast, bell peppers, onions, refried beans, avocado, cheddar cheese and sliced olives with a side of fresh pico de gallo & sour cream. The helpful elves at Belgian Waffle Works in Lake Arrowhead have put together a shopping guide for everyone on your list. Just print out this post and head on over the Lake Arrowhead Village, where you can enjoy quaint Old World Charm with New World Excitement.

1. Park. First, when you arrive at Lake Arrowhead Village, you will find ample places to park for free. If it’s snowing, which it well could be…take cover in the free covered parking, which is located just a few steps from the Village.
2. Take a load off. Take a leisurely stroll around town to get your bearings. Enjoy the holiday music which is piped through the entire Village. Instead of rushing around and missing the experience, determine to actually enjoying the simple pleasures in life, like starting off the day with a hot delicious breakfast at Belgian Waffle Works, located dockside. We’re open every day at 8 a.m. And you’ll find 17 specialty waffles which are crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. We’ll serve any with hot drawn butter and warm maple syrup.
3. Shop Til you Drop. Most of the shops in Lake Arrowhead Village are open from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. A big advantage of purchasing gifts on the mountain is that many are as unique as the person you are buying them for. In addition to one-of-a-kind specialty shops like Just Browsing, The Wishing Well, Sondra’s Boutique and Tattletales, you’ll find plenty of bargains at outlet Bass, Izod, Van Heusen, Coach, Claire’s, Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory and Pendleton.
4. Take a break. After hitting all of the boutique shops and outlets, it will be time to take a break for hot cocoa or gourmet coffee. We buy espresso beans from local merchant, Pine Cone Coffee Company, and brew it up in delicious holiday beverages like cappuccino, pumpkin and eggnog lattes and mochas. While your little ones have a cup of hot chocolate, you could enjoy a cup of our rich sipping chocolate, Xocai.
5. Shop some more. If it is fall you’re looking for, then you needn’t go far. Just make your way up the hill via Highway 18 or the 330 and head to Lake Arrowhead Village. Every year, travelers flock to these areas to take in the fall foliage, to catch a glimpse of nature’s splendor.

If you take a trip to Lake Arrowhead this fall, you won’t be disappointed. Every autumn we revel in the beauty of fall colors that blanket walkways and crunch underfoot. Scientifically speaking, the mixture of red, purple, orange and yellow is the result of chemical processes that take place in the tree as the seasons change from summer to winter.

According to the Weather Channel, during the spring and summer, the leaves have served as factories where most of the foods necessary for the tree’s growth are manufactured. This food-making process takes place in the leaf in numerous cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color. This extraordinary chemical absorbs from sunlight the energy that is used in transforming carbon dioxide and water to carbohydrates, such as sugars and starch. The founder and master brewer of Hangar 24 is Ben Cook, who has been brewing for six years. Cook’s experience includes working in quality assurance at Anheuser-Busch Brewery in Van Nuys, California and studying biology at Cal State San Bernardino.

More than the average college student whose love for beer extends to its ability to add to weekend celebrations, Cook fell in love with beer and its culture. So he followed up his bachelor’s degree with the Master Brewers Program at UC Davis and, after graduation, set out to find the perfect brewing equipment and a great location. He found both and settled in right next to the Redlands Airport and named his brewery Hangar 24. H24 is not only a brewery but also distributes beer from other small breweries in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Fullerton.

One of the main points covered in the widely popular movie, “Beer Wars,” is the fact that the nation’s three large breweries are effectively buying out and taking over the entire American beer market making it difficult it not impossible for small brewers to compete. H24 is not only a brewery but not also distributes beer from other small breweries in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Fullerton.

Belgian Waffle Works also sells beer from other small brewers such as Bootleggers & Speakeasy Breweries along with our import selections from Belgium. The BWW is a great place to enjoy a cold one, inside with a panoramic view of the lake or on the patio, which is practically on the lake. Since co-owner Gina is from Connecticut, we offer an East Coast Happy Hour daily Monday through Friday from 2-5 p.m., with $1 off beer, wine, specialty drinks and appetizers.

We also offer a selection of summer sliders to enjoy with a cold one. Sliders are served on a brioche bun from the LeBus Bakery and are available with a 2oz charbroiled Angus beef patty or make it a chili size with our great chili, cheese & onions. You can now also have a summer slider with a line-caught Alaskan Salmon patty or vegetarian patty made with several grains, corn, black beans and red peppers or try our slow cooked pulled pork with fresh coleslaw on top. One of Lake Arrowhead Village’s most popular restaurants, Belgian Waffle Works, will celebrate 30 years of dockside dining this summer.

Interesting Facts about Belgian Waffle Works:

• The BWW was the first “new” dockside business to open in 1982 after the Lake Arrowhead Village was rebuilt following a major renovation of the Village that was destroyed during a fire-training exercise.
• The original motto was, “Where the décor is Victorian and the dining is delicious.”
• To pay homage to previous owners Bob and Mary Baker, during the renovation, current owners, Chris and Gina Walters, kept the original Victorian wallpaper in one room which they named “Mary’s Room.”
• The menu used to include items such as Boysenberries Surprise, Sundae Stroll and The Triple Treat.
• Over the years, many celebrities have visited and continue to dine at the BWW including: Julia Roberts, Eric LaSalle, Ernie Hudson, Chris McDonald, June Lockhart, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, KFI’s John Koppel, Roseanne Barr, Bill Cobbs, Tori Spelling, The Nelson Brothers, Mike Connors, Beau Bridges, Ed McMahon, Brian Wilson, Coolio, Linkin Park and Alanis Morissette …to name a few.
• When the doors to Belgian Waffle Works opened in June, 1982, the tables were made of English Oak and the overhead shelves displayed many of the unique antiques that remain there today.
• The late Thomas Kincaid visited the BWW in October, 2008 and so enjoyed his dining experience on the dockside patio overlooking the lake that it inspired him to paint a picture of Belgian Waffle Works and The Arrowhead Queen. He later selected the painting to grace the cover of the 2009 edition of his calendar.
• In 2010, Disney Artist James Coleman also had breakfast on the BWW patio, which inspired him to paint Lake Arrowhead Village with wooden boats and the BWW in the background.
• During the restaurant remodel in 2008, local artist Patty McDonald painted the BWW. In fact, her artwork hangs on the walls in the area known as “Patty’s Room.”
• Prior to the renovation, there were only nine tables inside. So the waits times were long. The renovation increased the table-count to 20 and provided an updated, attractive European look with an awesome view of lake from all of our interior tables.
• An awning was built for the patio in 2010 and is enjoyed by guests who visit from around the world.

Although much has changed over the years, the most important things remain:

• The BWW exclusive recipe mix over the years was sold retail through Costco and Smart & Final and Iris. It was also used by the Hilton Hotels. It is now sold online at www.belgianwaffle.com and distributed by U.S. Foods to camps, hotels and other restaurants.
• Waffles feature prominently on a menu that includes dozens of delicious options. In fact, there are 17 mouth-watering specialty waffles from the simple original served with hot drawn butter and warm maple syrup to the decadent Apple Annie.
• Recently updated, the menu offers diners homemade soups, fresh market salads and gourmet sandwiches, juicy burgers, homemade breads, tantalizing appetizers and delicious pasta dishes. What’s more, we offer coffee drinks including rich sipping chocolate, espresso, cappuccino, premium deserts, wine, beer, specialty drinks and more.
• Still prominently displayed are oak doors and panels, sliding doors and stained glass circa 1850, much of which was shipped from a hotel in Kansas City, which was being demolished.

For family fun, celebrate Halloween in Lake Arrowhead.

Fall in Lake Arrowhead. The weather is cool, not cold, and the leaves on the trees put on quite a show. It’s also the only time when it’s socially acceptable for grownups to dress as Batman. Of course we’re talking about Halloween!

Halloween in Lake Arrowhead is always a “treat!” Several events in Lake Arrowhead Village help kids and adults to celebrate the spookiest holiday of the year.

• Enjoy a fun and ghoulish Halloween party with live music from Pearl Jam cover band Vitalogy on Sunday, October 30^th from 3:00 to 5:00 PM. Table reservations are available for only $50!
• The party continues on October 31^st with Mountain Brew and My Own Holiday playing from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.
• The kids get their fun with trick or treating on the 30^th from 1 to 3 PM and on the 31^st from 3:30 to 5:30 PM

• Hot toddys are a wonderful spiced drink for fall. Using honey, whiskey, cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon, we let this concoction simmer until it’s perfect. If you prefer, we can take out the cloves and cinnamon sticks before serving!
• Chilly air? Check! Perhaps a warm alcoholic beverage? Double check! Now you need some grub. How about a hot sandwich? Choose from many delicious options including our tuna melt, roast beef sandwich, and warm grilled turkey sandwich on sourdough. Each sandwich is perfectly sized to fill you up with comfort food goodness.
• Our steel-cut oatmeal served piping hot with raisins, milk and warm spiced apples is the perfect way to start your day. You want extra apples? Just ask!
